Asolo
Known as the 'City of a Hundred Horizons', Asolo is a perfectly preserved and lively medieval town. Its fortress dominates the plain and the Grappa foothills from its hilltop.
Three women, in particular, have left their mark on its history: Caterina Cornaro, queen of Cyprus, to whom Venice donated the seignory of Asolo at the end of the 15th century and who surrounded herself with the greatest intellectuals of the time, including Pietro Bembo; Eleonora Duse, a great actress of the early 20th century who is buried at the local cemetery; Freya Stark, who passed away in Asolo in 1993 at the age of 100, a British explorer and writer and great expert of the Middle East.
